Beam Pocket Models

  • Model BP-LARGE:Structurally capable of housing steel wide flange beams from W16 to W27.
  • Model BP-SMALL: For steel wide flange beams from W6 to W16.
    It may be used with wood beams as well, if it is combined with the optional Wood Bearing Plate (WP-1).
    Model BP-30: Typically applied in residential and small business projects.
  • Model BP-ICF: To be used with ICF blocks.
    Same beam sizes as BP-SMALL above.

Dead Load Rating of the BP Bearing Plate

The Beam Pocket is engineered to support the dead weight of a beam prior to leveling and grouting.

  • The BP-SMALL and BP-ICF models come with a 1/4 in bearing plate, capable of supporting a point load of 3 kps or 3000 pounds of dead load – not design load – before grouting the bearing plate. This equates to a maximum total beam dead weight of 6000 pounds – Max for 1/4 in plate.
  • The BP-LARGE model includes a 3/8 in bearing plate, rated for a point load of 5.1 kps or 5100 pounds per end. This corresponds to a maximum total beam dead weight of 10,200 pounds – Max for 3/8 in plate.
  • For heavier applications, an optional 1/2 in bearing plate which holds 9.1 kps or 9100 pounds per end. Total beam dead weight = 18,200 lbs.

Engineered Design Load

The Beam Pocket transfers the bearing load directly into the concrete through a vertical load path.

  • The BP-SMALL and BP-ICF models, when used with a 1/4-inch bearing plate and grout, can support up to 124,800 lbs or 124 k.
  • The BP-LARGE with a 3/8 in bearing plate and grout installed can support 164,000 lbs or 166 k.
  • For higher load requirements, heavier bearing plates are available for both the BP-SMALL and BP-LARGE models.

Review Checklist for your Structural Engineer

  1. The maximum point dead load on the Beam Pocket must not exceed the limits outlined in Section 2 above.
    The design load limits must comply in range provided in Section 3.
  2. The reinforcement layout (rebar behind, beside, and beneath the Beam Pocket) should be designed and verified by a licensed structural engineer.
  3. Consideration must be given to the thermal expansion and contraction requirements of the beam being placed in the Beam Pocket.
  4. The type and compressive strength of the structural grout used in the Beam Pocket must be appropriate for the application and specified by the design professional.
  5. Confirm that the anchor bolts meet all design and code requirements.
    The LARGE model uses 3/4 in dia anchor bolts. The SMALL and ICF models use 1/2 in dia anchor bolts. A307/ A36 .
